The bronze shield was executed by Henry Elkington, Feb 20 1851 (inscription on shield) from a design by Luke Limner, which he exhibited in the Great Exhibition of 1851.
The winning essay in the Art journal prize essay competition for "An essay on the best mode of rendering the Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nations ... practically useful to the British manufacturer"; the prize of one hundred guineas was won by Ralph Nicholson Wornum for his essay The Exhibition as a lesson in taste.
With four essays on various aspects of the Exhibition ([62] p. at end in various pagings).
With portrait of Prince Albert opposite t.p.; engraved by F. Bacon from a painting by W.C. Ross; dated Sept. 8th 1841 published by Colnaghi and Puckle.

THE ART JOURNAL ILLUSTRATED CATALOGUE 1851

The Art Journal published this special issue to commemorate the Great Exhibition. It contains a selection of objects that were exhibited, as well as some essays of wider interest. The design of the front cover is the same as the inkstand in this display.
