Notes: Large paper, illustrated edition. An ordinary paper edition in 1 v. measuring 27 cm., with reset text and 3 chromolithographed plates, was also published.
Issued in 130 copies (115 for presentation and 15 for W.H.F. Talbot), all bound by Rivière in red morocco; cf. Goldschmidt & Naef.
Vol. 1: [2], ccv, 853 [i.e. 358] p., [5] leaves of plates; v. 2: iv, 359-870 p., [45] leaves of plates; v. 3: iv, 871-1332 p., [45] leaves of plates; v. 4: iv, 1333-8128 [i.e. 1828] p., 3, [59] leaves of plates.
The 157 plates consist of 154 mounted photographs (salted paper prints) with engraved captions, and 3 chromolithographs.
The mounted photographs were printed by Robert Bingham from albumenized glass plate negatives by C.M. Ferrier and from paper negatives by H. Owen, F. von Martens, and Bingham, with assistance from N. Henneman; they consist of views of, and objects displayed at, the exhibition.
"This work, on the results of the Great Exhibition of 1851, illustrated with photographic plates, being one of fifteen copies given by the Roayl Commissioners to H.F. Talbot, Esq. of Lacock Abbey, as the inventor of this branch of the photographic art, was by him presented to ..."--Half title.
