In the early 1900s, Steichen’s photographs frequently featured in the magazine Camera Work. In the 1920s, he moved away from the softer style of Pictorialism and became the chief photographer for the magazines Vogue and Vanity Fair, adopting a sharper aesthetic. In this portrait, he used a simple black background to focus attention on the colourful dress and its wearer, Vanity Fair editor Clare Booth Luce.
