GOTHIC ARCHITECTURE IMPROVED Batty Langley and Thomas Langley, 1747 The Gothic style had first been revived in the 1740s, when it became fashionable for garden buildings and interiors. In this book, first published in 1742 as Ancient Architecture Restored, and Improved, Batty Langley attempted to make Gothic intelligible to craftsmen and builders brought up on the classical orders, by devising his own Gothic 'orders'.
