Historical context | .In March 1842, after spending two months at Xanthus where the expedition of Charles Fellows was excavating (see Fellows, Travels and Researches in Asia Minor, 1852, p.451), Daniell and two companions from the Beacon, Lieutenant T.A.B. Spratt, assistant-surveyor, and E. Forbes, naturalist, undertook a further examination of the region. Their visit to Myra is described in Spratt & Forbes, pp.122-35. Many of Daniell's drawings of Lycia are in the BM, PD, including a version of SD295 in pen, water- and bodycolour, 33 x 49.5 cm., inscribed on the back Theatre of Myra in Lycia - with rock tombs, (1872-11-9-44): see no.28 under E.T. Daniell in L. Binyon, Catalogue of Drawings by British Artists...in the Department of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum, Vol.II, 1900. |
