This drawing is a direct copy of John Constable's sketch, 'East Bergholt Common' dated 6 October 1814. John Fisher (1748-1825) became Bishop of Salisbury in 1807, a position he held until his death. He was a close friend and patron of Constable who often lent his drawings to Fisher and his family to copy.

| Object history | Archdeacon John Fisher's pencil drawing of The Family Windmill on Bergholt Heath is a direct copy of John Constable's sketch East Bergholt Common, with the windmill, dated 6 October 1814, which is page 75 of his 1814 sketchbook in the V&A (museum no. 1259-1888). Fisher was Constable's closest friend and artistic confidant, and their correspondence reveals that the artist lent Fisher, his wife and sisters (who were all amateurs) his sketchbooks and oil sketches to copy. The drawing is, therefore, a record of this friendship, and of the uses made of drawings in the early 19th century. |
