Cape

c. 1750 (made), c.1800 (made)
Place of origin

Chintz capes like this were worn indoors and outdoors by women in Friesland, Netherlands in the winter in the 18th century. This one is very pieced, and was no doubt made from pieces of chintz left over from tailoring a dress. A wentke (woman's gown) in the same material is in the collection of the Museum 'Hidde Nijland Stichting' Hindeloopen.

WOMAN’S CAPE
Cotton, mordant- and resist-dyed, lined with wool
Coromandel Coast for the Dutch market
c. 1750

Various European markets preferred different styles of chintz. The Dutch market tended to favour chintz with dark backgrounds and bold motifs. This blue-ground chintz cape belonged to a family in Hindeloopen, in the Netherlands. It was patched together from uneven pieces, probably scraps left over from tailoring a garment.
