Taxus Baccata takes as its subject an Ancient Yew tree, located in Tandridge, Surrey. During 2011, Rolland visited the tree at the four seasonal peaks: the spring equinox, the summer solstice, the autumnal equinox and the winter solstice. Regarding the process of discovering the tree, Rolland said: ‘I spent an entire day at its feet thinking how best to portray it and just spending some time together. Its roots really caught my imagination and even though the tree is enormous, I felt the roots best represented him’. This series explores the contrast between the Micro and the Macro worlds. As the centuries-old roots of the tree appear next to fresh green shoots, the photographs evoke a sense of cyclical timelessness and universality.
