Bound in England between 1558 and 1588 in brown calf. Covers panelled in gold with fillets and ornaments, and with the cartouche armorial (crest and bear and staff device) stamp of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, at the centres, upper and lower covers. Spine gilt with fillets.
The book takes its title-page and first section from a later edition, making the original section difficult to identify.

ARMORIAL LEATHER BINDING 1558-1588, for Book of Common Prayer, 1552 or 1559 Prayer books might have an elaborate binding. This lavish example was commissioned by the Earl of Leicester, who was Queen Elizabeth's favourite and a great patron of literature. Gold-tooling, introduced to England around 1515, was the standard form of decoration for an expensive binding.
