1558-1588, for Book of Common Prayer, 1552 or 1559
Prayer books might have an elaborate binding. This lavish example was commissioned by the Earl of Leicester, who was Queen Elizabeth's favourite and a great patron of literature. Gold-tooling, introduced to England around 1515, was the standard form of decoration for an expensive binding.
