The bindings of Middle Eastern manuscripts usually have a flap attached to the book cover. The flap was tucked under the upper cover when the book was stored flat. These covers have a circular medallion in the centre, and quarter-medallions of the lobed 'cloud-collar' type in the corners. A half-medallion of this type is found on the flap.
