Jacobus de Strada, Epitome du thesor des antiquitez, 1553; the binding 1570-1580
In France Mary received a wide education, learning Latin, Italian, Spanish and some Greek. In later life she had a large collection of books of which this may be one. Its elaborate French-style binding prominently displays her arms and royal crown and the initial M. It is an Italian study of the portraits found on ancient medals, translated into French.
Bound in calf with gold and blind ruling and stamping
Published in Lyon, France by Jacopo Strada (born in Venice, Italy, about 1515, died in Vienna, 1588) and Thomas Guerin (born in 1529, died in 1592); probably bound in France by an unidentified craftsman
