Gallery label | A SOURCE BOOK OF ANIMAL DESIGNS
First published 1664, reprinted about 1750
The publisher of this book hoped to sell it to craft workers and artists. Francis Barlow has drawn many individual animals with clear outlines. Any skilled maker using this book would find the animals easy to trace or copy by hand, as the frontispiece suggests (see photograph, right).
Engraving, ink on paper
Designed by Francis Barlow (born, possibly in Lincolnshire, about 1620, died in London, 1704); engraved by William Vaughan; printed in London for Henry Overton (active 1706-1764), Newgate From A book containing such beasts as are most usefull for such as practice drawing, Graveing, armes painting, chaseing and for severall other occasions, 1664.
