This is one of the hangings sent to the actor David Garrick and his wife from Calcutta in 1775, and impounded by customs on their arrival in England. The set includes several other curtains and valances. This curtain was probably intended to hang at the foot of the bed. It was acquired by the donor at the sale of the contents of the Garricks' villa in 1864.

This acquisition information reflects that found in the Museum records (Asia Department registers and/or Central Inventory) as part of a 2023 provenance research project. |
