R.B. Kitaj made portraits of many of his poet and writer friends of whom Michael Hamburger was one. Hamburger was born in Berlin in 1924 but fled with his family to Britain in 1933 when Hitler came to power. He became well known as a poet and translator. His brother Paul, who changed his surname to Hamlyn, became a distinguished publisher and philanthropist.
