Typographical poster printed in red and back letterpress on discoloured buff paper advertising Shadow of a Man by Paul Erikson at the King’s Theatre Glasgow, 12 May 1952. The word KINGS appears at the top of the poster in large black lettering on a red block of colour which features, centre, a shield of a lion rampant printed in red with areas of the buff paper unprinted to make the background of the shield. The title SHADOW OF A MAN, and the name of the director Paul Erickson, are printed in red capitals, with the names of the name of the cast Sonny Tufts, Iris Russell, Brenda Hogan, Robert Raglan and Henry Mollison, the names of the producers John C. Mather and W.H. Williams, Routledge & White (Plays) Ltd. and ‘Settings by Vic’ in black. The title of the next show BLESS THE BRIDE appear at the foot of the poster in red lettering, while ‘A Musical Play by A.P.Herbert with Music by Vivian Ellis’ and ‘Charles B. Cochran's Record-Breaking Success’ are in black. The prices are given as Boxes 42/6, 34/- and 24/-; Orchestra Stalls 8/6, 6/-; Grand Circle 8/6, 6/-; Back Stalls 4/-; Upper Circle 4/-; Balcony 2/- and 1/6.

Object history | The Shakespeare Theatre opened in 1888 in Fraser Street, Liverpool, built by J.H. Havelock-Sutton, with a seating capacity of over 3,000. At the time it was built Liverpool had twenty six theatres, and numerous Music Halls. The theatre was re-named The Shakespeare Theatre of Varieties by 1942. It burnt down in 1976 and was demolished. |
