Enslen was a German painter and travelling showman who, aged eighty, experimented with photography after reading about Talbot’s work. He sent this example to Talbot and it remained in Talbot’s collection. Enslen appears never to have used a camera. Instead, he overlaid engravings, plants and other natural specimens on sensitized paper.
