Poster advertising Chipperfield's Circus and Menagerie at Newark-on-Trent, 29 September 1969.
The poster, in the style of a 19th century playbill, advertises lions, tigers, giraffes, polar bears, brown bears, chimpanzees, elephants, camels, llamas, dogs, hippopotamus 'and the Noble Friends of Man, Horses by the Score'. The ticketing arrangements are, however, very 20th century: tickets, described as 'paid accommodation,' can be obtained at Coynes (Radio and TV Electrical Engineers) in the Market Place.
The Chipperfield family had long associations with circus, performing animals and menageries, dating back to the 17th century. The family toured a circus and menagerie in the 19th and 20th centuries, becoming one of the biggest circuses in Britain.

Printed on the red background beneath the playbill is a note explaining that the above advertisement is prepared in the style of Chipperfield's Circus 120 years ago and that an original bill of the period can be seen at the circus. |
