Brooch

2007 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This brooch was commissioned by the Museum from the enameller Jane Short. Its making was filmed to be shown on a screen in the William and Judith Bollinger Jewellery Gallery and on the V&A website. The brooch illustrates the enamelling techniques of champlevé (where the enamel is contained within cells carved out of the metal) and basse-taille (where translucent enamel covers an engraved pattern). The flowered panel is of champlevé, the red panel is of basse-taille, although in both panels there is decorative engraving beneath the enamel. The design was inspired by eighteenth-century silk designs.
