Place of origin |
This hanging card advertised Chipperfield's Circus and Zoo in a big top at Worcester Racecourse, known locally as the Pitchcroft. Like all the big tenting circuses of the day, it featured a variety of human and animal acts, and included an unusual group of performing cart horses. It is illustrated with an image of Jackie Sloan, the white-face clown.
The Chipperfield family had long associations with fairground, circus, performing animals and menageries, stretching back to the 17th century. The family became established in the traditional circus business in the 1930s, and after a pause during the war, when Jimmy Chipperfield served as a fighter pilot in the RAF, began touring the country again with the circus. Chipperfield's became one of the biggest and best circuses touring the UK under the control of various family members until the late 1980s.
