The poster 'Delnická Olympiada V Praze 1921 Cerven' [Workers' Olympiad In Prague June 1921] by Cutta is a magnificent example of one of the early alternative Olympics that were established in the twentieth century. In 1921, 1927 and again in 1934, the Czechoslovakian Workers' Gymnastics put on large-scale Olympiads in Prague. According to Robert F. Wheeler, it was not unusual for 35,000 people to attend these gatherings (Journal of Contemporary History, vol. 13, no. 2, Special issue: 'Workers' Culture' (Apr. 1978), pp.191-210).
Cutta's design - a colour lithograph printed in black, red and ochre - is in the socialist realist style associated with the early years of Communism. It depicts the figure of a heroic male athlete holding a bunch of red flowers, and posed against a swirling red flag and industrial architectural forms. The musculature of the athlete is echoed in the flowing shapes of the freely-drawn sky.
