blue/orange was an award winning Royal National Theatre production from 2000, written by Joe Penhall and directed by Roger Michell. It concerns the story of a patient in a London mental hospital, who claims to be the son of an exiled African dictator. Touching on race, mental illness and modern British life, it won the Evening Standard Award for Best Play in 2000, and Critics' Circle and Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Play in 2001.
First performed at the National Theatre in 2000, it transferred to the Duchess Theatre in 2001 with the same cast: Bill Nighy, Andrew Lincoln and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Joe Penhall also wrote the script for the 2005 BBC television adaptation of the play, but the original cast changed for this production.
