This outfit was designed in 2016 by Belgian designer and former art director of HUGO by Hugo Boss Bruno Pieters for his online clothing brand Honest By. Pieters launched Honest by in 2012, declaring it the world's first 100% transparent company. Transparent supply chains have become a focus for groups campaigning for ethical and sustainable fashion, who argue that consumers can make an informed choice if the information is made available. Honest by publish full details of their suppliers, costs, wages and mark-ups. The customer can see where the material came from, how much it cost, who made the product, how long each stage took, where it was made, the overall cost of production and the final mark-up calculation. Each product page on the honest by online store includes extensive details about every element of the garment, including buttons, zips, and swing tags. Full details of the composition of the fabrics are given, and any ecological certificates that they qualify for are explained in detail.

As well as offering a transparent supply chain, Honest By aims to use less environmentally damaging textiles and components. The jacket and skirt include recycled polyester and organic cotton thread. They are also guaranteed vegan, with no animal product used at any stage of their manufacture.

Pieters takes information sharing one step further with this particular outfit. The jacket and skirt are made from custom woven fabric emblazoned with details about the weaver and loom used in its manufacture. For this reason, the outfit is emblematic of honest by’s ethos, as well as the wider growing appetite for transparency in the fashion supply chain.
