Historical context | The fellahin may be raking the ground flat in preparation for the planting of indigo. The attribution to Bossi rests on stylistic similarities to lithographs from drawings by `S. Bossi' in Edward Joshua Cooper, Views in Egypt and Nubia, [1824-27]. Bossi, according to the DNB, an artist from Rome, was engaged by Cooper for his visit to Egypt in 1820-21. In the Preface to his book Cooper pays tribute to Bossi's work and records that the illustrations were 'a selection from his drawings'. SD124-126 may be three of the remaining unpublished drawings. |
