This Trailmaster leather waistcoat formed part of an outfit worn by Derek Falconer and displayed in the exhibition Streetstyle, From Sidewalk to Catwalk, 1940 to Tomorrow held at the V&A in 1994-5. The complete outfit consisted of a leather cap (remade by Falconer in 1994), the waistcoat (USA), Silton leather trousers (USA) and leather platform shoes (UK). The outfit reflected a style of ‘Soul Boy’ dress worn by some British men in the early 1970s.
Derek Falconer bought the items in Shaftesbury Avenue in the early 1970s. The distinctive ‘Soul Boy’ look was popularised by pop stars including Errol Brown, lead singer of Hot Chocolate, and Isaac Hayes, who wrote the musical score for the 1971 film Shaft.
