Daguerreotype of a bust of the Duke of Wellington. The daguerreotype is in a gold-coloured mount with an oval window, and glazed. This is in a leather-coated wooden case lined with faded red velvet, and there are two metal hook fastenings on the right side of the case. The case has a border design on the front, and a stamp in gold of Richard Beard's studio on the back.

Physical description
Daguerreotype of a bust of the Duke of Wellington. The daguerreotype is in a gold-coloured mount with an oval window, and glazed. This is in a leather-coated wooden case lined with faded red velvet, and there are two metal hook fastenings on the right side of the case. The case has a border design on the front, and a stamp in gold of Richard Beard's studio on the back.

Marks and inscriptions
  • Green sticker with '17' stuck on the back of the case in the top left corner. Brown label with '8' handwritten on it, stuck on the front of the case in the top left corner.

Production
The daguerreotype process was patented by Richard Beard in 1841. Antoine Claudet already had a license to practice.
Beard operated a photographic studio on the roof of the Royal Polytechnic Institute in 1841, where several 'operators' and assistants worked as photographers.
