Daguerreotype of a bust of the Duke of Wellington. The daguerreotype is in a gold-coloured mount with an oval window, and glazed. This is in a leather-coated wooden case lined with faded red velvet, and there are two metal hook fastenings on the right side of the case. The case has a border design on the front, and a stamp in gold of Richard Beard's studio on the back.

Production | The daguerreotype process was patented by Richard Beard in 1841. Antoine Claudet already had a license to practice. Beard operated a photographic studio on the roof of the Royal Polytechnic Institute in 1841, where several 'operators' and assistants worked as photographers. |
