This fountain is a reproduction of one made in c.1629 by the Italian sculptor Pietro Tacca (1577-1640). The original is in the Piazza Santissima Annunziata in Florence. The replica was made in Rome around 1890-1909, and bought by the collector J H Fitzhenry, who gave it to the Museum as a memorial to the great benefactor of the Museum, George Salting. From 1910 until 1979 it was displayed in the central quadrangle of the Museum, but was dismantled and put into store when the garden was redesigned.

| Object history | The fountain is a replica of that of c.1629 by Pietro Tacca in the Piazza Santissima Annunziata in Florence. It was given to the Museum in 1910 to commemorate the great benefactor of the collections, George Salting, by his friend and fellow-collector J H Fitzhenry. It occupied a central position in the Museum garden from 1910 until it was dismantled in 1979. |
