Object history
Purchased for £15 from Monsieur Emile Peyre.
Historical context
Probably from a four-door cupboard (armoire "de sacristie") or cabinet of the types illustrated in Laurence Fligny: Le Mobilier en Picardie. (Picardie, 1990), pp. 218-221. Such pieces customarily bear allegorical figures representing the Four Seasons, classical divinities, the Virtues, sometimes derived from prints by Goltzius or Schiaminossi. Fligny notes that the play of light on the raised flat panels changes the aspect of the facade considerably.
