Enrico Cecchetti was a virtuoso Italian dancer who had performed in London from 1888 to 1892. He became an inspiring teacher of professional dancers in St Petersburg and Warsaw before serving as a teacher and mime artist for Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes and Anna Pavlova's company. Cecchetti taught in London from 1918, officially opening his studio to train professional dancers in 1920. His ballet training developed strength, discipline and co-ordination through the full use of the body.
