Winnie ille Pu

Book
1967 (published)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Winnie Ille Pu, a Latin version of Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh, became an unexpected bestseller. Alexander Lenard first translated the ‘Heffalump’ story to teach children Latin. Later, he finished the other chapters and gave copies to reference libraries. One librarian said: ‘After several attempts were made to pinch it, we had to lock up the existing copy’. Publishers soon became interested. Within a week of the American release, Scribner’s Bookstore announced: ‘Editione omne vendita non restant exempla libri’ (‘The whole edition having been sold, no copies of the book remain’).
