Place of origin |
The Adelphi Theatre on the Strand, London was first built in 1806 as the Sans Pareil. It was re-named in 1819 after the complex of West London streets and houses built by brothers Robert and James Adam from 1768. The word 'Adelphi' from the Greek 'Adelphoi', means brothers.
In 1858, the theatre had been demolished and re-built with an expanded capacity of 1,500 seats, christened as 'the New Adelphi'. The caption of this print, 'the old Adelphi Theatre, 1860', therefore, may commemorate the previous version of the theatre.
