[this was the pen-name of the various editors and proprietors of the 'Gentleman's magazine' throughout its life, including Edward Cave (1691-1754) (proprietor and editor, 1736-1754), John Nichols (1745-1826) (co-proprietor (with David Henry) and contributing editor, 1778-1791 ; proprietor and contributing editor, 1792-1826), his son John Bowyer Nichols (1779-1863) (proprietor, 1726-1833), and John Bowyer Nichols' son John Gough Nichols (1806-1873) (part-editor, 1828-1833)].
