Cameraless Photography William Henry Fox Talbot (1800-1877) Astrantia major - the ‘Melancholy Gentleman’ 13 November 1838 Photogenic drawing negative 17.3 x 9.5 cm Museum number RPS.55-2017 (RPS No. 025134 / Schaaf 2244) Talbot used the term ‘photogenic drawing’ to describe his cameraless process as early as 1834. In his private notes of 1835, he described what he set out to invent as ‘sciagraphy’ – the art of depicting objects through their shadows.
