Architectural Print

Artist/Maker

The pastel drawing from which the print was created, and then this print itself, were produced about 1998 at the design stage of the Red Building, the last of the trio of buildings making up the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles designed by César Pelli. The first to be completed was the Blue Building, affectionately known as the Blue Whale, in 1975. The second was the Green Building, in 2006. The Red Building opened in 2011.

The small original pastel drawing was greatly enlarged when printed. The print was made by Nash Editions, a fine art digital printers founded in 1991 by Graham Nash (of the rock band Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young), using the new IRIS Graphics 3047 inkjet printer (this printer was donated by Nash to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in 2005). Although it is common practice today for architects to have their drawings (paper and digitally-born) digitally printed for presentation, this was rarely the case when this Pelli print was created.
