Place of origin

Photograph of Serge Lifar, Lubov Tchernicheva, Alice Nikitina and Felia Doubrovska in Apollon Musagète taken on stage at His Majesty's Theatre, London, June 1928. Apollon Musagète was first performed at the theatre Sarah Bernhardt, Paris on 12 June 1928 with a score and book by Igor Stravinsky and choreography by George Balanchine and was performed in London later that month.

This photograph appeared in the Illustrated London News p.13 on 7 July 1928 when the caption read 'The coda of the Muses dance: Apollo (M.Lifar) posed with the muses.'
Only three of the nine muses appear in the ballet as Stravinsky was commissioned by the Library of Congress in Washington where the stage was small. The American production was choreographed by Adolf Bolm but Diaghilev had the option of the European premiere when it was choreographed by George Balanchine. As Apollo it has proved a long-lasting popular ballet and been redesigned on many occasions and is usually performed on an undecorated stage or one with a staircase symbolically representing the mountain at the back.
