Studio photograph of Felia Doubrovska as Polymnia in Apollon Musagète, performed by Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, 1928. Apollon Musagète was first performed at the theatre Sarah Bernhardt, Paris on 12 June 1928 with a score and book by Igor Stravinsky and choreography by George Balanchine.
This is one of a series of photographs taken at Lipnitzki’s studio in Paris in 1928 to publicise Apollon Musagéte . The photo shows one of the original costumes, tutus with asymmetrical hems derived from paintings by André Bauchant. These were only worn in 1928 and redesigned as jersey tunics by Chanel the following year.
Polymnia was the muse of mime and in the ballet is given a mask by Apollo. In her solo she begins holding it and after she discards it holds the forefinger of her left hand over her lips, stressing the silent nature of her art as shown in the photograph.
