BOOK OF HOURS 1526 The faithful sought to minimise the amount of time they would have to spend in Purgatory. The text in red in this prayer book refers to a papal grant, known as an indulgence, that promised a period of remission from Purgatory for reciting the specified prayers. Protestants contested the idea of Purgatory. It was removed from the Anglican doctrine after Henry VIII's Reformation.
