Macho Man
In the early ’70s, some men wore shoes with thick and heavy heels. This look conveyed male privilege and authority, just as it had in the 17th century, when heeled shoes for men were first fashionable in Europe. Heels allowed the 1970s wearer, also usually in flashy clothing, to walk confidently and tall, and to project a domineering masculinity. The look gained negative associations with oversexed pimps and dangerous gangsters.
