This embroidered picture depicts the Royal Mother of the West (Xi Wangmu), attended to by handmaidens. The figure of Xi Wangmu is often associated with Paradise and attainment of immortality, and this woven picture might have been presented as a gift for someone's birthday. The embroidery was made to fit the frame.

Physical description | Panel of blue silk embroidered with coloured silks and some gold thread in long and short satin and stem stitches. Some minor details of the rocks and trees are painted. Landscape setting with rocks and pine trees and, in the background, distant mountain peaks and wispy clouds. Beside a large pine tree, a symbol of longevity, stands an immortal attended by two servants bearing ground vases. The immortal, who is wearing a rust coloured robe ornamented with 'shou' symbols, has a white gourd vase and a fungus slung from his belt. The ground is scattered with flowers and fungus plants (ling chih). |
