Chest
late 16th century (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Chest of dovetailed construction (40mm on the ends, 26mm on the front) , carved with low relief, with diamond punched ground and inked surface detail.
The front (20mm thick), is formed by a single wide plank, partly split, with a high freize of running animals (dogs chasing deer), and a low freize of scrolling foliage; a central candelabrum with enthroned king above two centaurs and a tent(?) at left; with an insert of new wood where the lock originally was. This may represent the triumph of a Virtue; at the left and right is a standing soldier within a niche; with two large panels, each showing a chariot accompanied by soldiers with spears or standards;
The lid (23mm thick) formed of two planks, held on 2 iron H hinges, with scored lines and traces of inking. It has modern mouldings, nailed on the front and sides. As there are traces of at least four original ring hinges in the back of the chest, the lid appears to be a replacement from another, similar chest.
The back of two wide planks, with scored parallel lines and rough tool marks. Each end is plain (without handles), and formed by two planks, 19mm thick. The base (with a torus edge moulding) is 18mm thick, apparently early (hand tool marks, riven timber); modern, mitred battens with corner blocks have been added below the base, raising it off the floor by about 7cm.
Modifications
The lid with patch repairs at both ends.
