Backgammon Board of inlaid walnut. It consists of two sections folding in the centre with iron hinges. The boards are enclosed by a raised framework which is mitred at the corners and moulded on the inner side. Each board is inlaid with trefoil-headed 'points' in dark and light wood alternatively, and in the centre is an oblong panel with an inlaid pattern of scrolled foliage. When closed, the boards are secured by a modern brass catch.

Object history | Games board, purchased 25/2/28 from Messrs Stair & Andrew Ltd --530 Notes from R.P. 28/2043 Backgammon board -- walnut inlaid. Condition noted: chipped cracked & split worm eaten pieces missing H C Smith minute 28/2/28 "this is a most interesting and rare object ….an English backgammon board, dating probably from the late 16th or early 17th century….possibly as late as Charles I, but not later. It is of very considerably importance. I have never yet met with so early a one, and as it has some admirable inlaid decoration, it will be a particularly valuable addition to our collection". n.b. note in Reg. Description 11.5.95 "missing" |
