This cup and saucer was made at the Brampton pottery in Torksey, Lincolnshire, between 1802-08, when the ceramic artist, and porcelain manufacturer, William Billingsley was involved with the firm. The Japanese style Imari decoration relates closely pattern No. 355 in use by the Pinxton factory, Nottingham, where Billingsley previously worked. Of the two Brampton ceramics in the V&A collection, a chocolate cup and saucer (C.437&A-1920) is the only other known example with this pattern.
