The production starred Francesco Tamagno. Tamagno was a highly successful Italian opera singer who toured Europe and America. His performance of Otello was the first performance of Giuseppe Verdi's opera, based on Shakespeare's play Othello. The performance achieved resounding success in Milan in 1887, and toured Europe and America after 1887.

The print shows Otello threatening another character, and the background shows a grand room with an arched window and columned doorway. Francesco Tomagno plays Othello and is shown in a black tunic with a haltered sword and types. He has his arms outstretched at each side, looking downwards towards the character on the floor. The other character is also in a black tunic, with striped tights. He has his back turned and is covering his face with his left arm.
