Sarah Siddons (1755-1831) played Mrs. Haller in The Stranger by August von Kotzebue, with her brother John Philip Kemble (1757-1823) in the title role, at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in 1798. The original painting by Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) after which this print was made, is in the collection of the Tate Gallery (N000785), bequeathed in 1868 by Mrs. Siddons' youngest daughter, Cecilia Combe. Another engraving of the painting, by Charles Turner ARA., was published by Henry Colburn in 1826.
