Unframed diptych painting, Kingdom, painted in England by John Bartlett in 2011

A large painting in two equal sections depicting a young boy sitting on the floor of a living room surrounded by a built environment of toys. The boy is warmly dressed in long trousers and wears a West Ham United football shirt underneath a brown cardigan. He is absorbed in the toy figure he holds in his hands. Behind him is a large layout of multicoloured construction blocks, stacked plastic beakers, buildings, dinosaur toys and a wooden (probably Brio) train set. Outside this layout in front and to the left of the image are some classic toys including a stacking ring set and a Fisher-Price Chatter telephone. Behind everything are the very shadowy images of some of the room's furniture, the only defined pieces being two monkey figures part of a See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak no Evil set.

This painting is of the artist's young son surrounded by a multitude of toys. Some are in his own, some are his father's and others belonged to his grandmother. There are iconic toys from three generations ranging from classic wooden building blocks and the Fisher Price telephone to modern Brio trains and plastic dinosaurs. The boy is completely engrossed in his play and sits in a creative play space and time machine of memory while the furniture in the room fades into the background and the toys are presided over by the See No Evil, Speak No Evil monkeys.
