The print shows Sarah Bernhardt leaving the Lyceum, having completed her summer season of performances. Behind her is Mary Anderson entering, ahead of her performance of The Winter's Tale. in 1887.
The production of William Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale marked Mary Anderson's third season performing at the Lyceum Theatre. The performance included Anderson in the dual role as Hermione (Queen to Leontes) and Perdita (Leontes' daughter). Johnston Forbes-Robertson also featured in the production as Leontes. The production would run for 160 performances in London, and was also taken to the United States. Anderson collapsed on stage during a performance in Washington in 1889 and would announce her retirement soon after, disbanding the company.
