The production of Romeo and Juliet was part of Henry Irvings actor-management of the Lyceum Theatre, which saw him play the lead character in multiple productions alongside Ellen Terry. In this production, Irving played Romeo and Terry played Juliet, alongside William Terriss as Mercutio and music by Sir Julius Benedict.

Print showing balcony scene in a production of Romeo and Juliet, at the Lyceum Theatre, March 1882. The print was published in Punch Magazine on March 18th, 1882. The print shows Romeo, played by Henry Irving in a dark coloured embroidered tunic with dark tights, with an emphasised head and hair, looking up towards Juliet on the balcony. Juliet, played by Ellen Terry, is leaning over the balcony looking towards Romeo.

The print includes the line: "Romeo! Romeo! Wherefore Art Thou Romeo!", followed by the comment 'But had the Divine Williams witnessed the performance, he might have been able to satisfy his own query'.
