The production of Romeo and Juliet was part of Henry Irvings actor-management of the Lyceum Theatre, which saw him play the lead character in multiple productions alongside Ellen Terry. In this production, Irving played Romeo and Terry played Juliet, alongside William Terriss as Mercutio and music by Sir Julius Benedict.

Print showing balcony scene in a production of Romeo and Juliet, at the Lyceum Theatre, March 1882. The print was published in The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News on March 18th, 1882. The print shows Romeo, played by Henry Irving in a dark coloured embroidered tunic with lightly coloured tights, he is leaning over onto the balcony with his arms around Juliet, leaning to kiss her. Juliet, played by Ellen Terry, is standing on the other side of the balcony wearing a long white dress and has her arms around Romeo. On the left side of the print is Mrs Stirling as The Nurse wearing a dark dress with a ruffed white collar and a beaded crucifix necklace.
