Brief description | Set design by Phil R. Daniels for Humpty Dumpty at the York Theatre Royal, December 2009 |
Physical description | Set design by Phil R. Daniels for Humpty Dumpty, the design in three parts consisting of a backdrop, a cut cloth and a piece of scenery. The backdrop is blue, with two orange lines towards the lower edge, suggesting dado rails. Rising from the lower edge, at centre, a brown 'tendril' that curves to form a frame, within which is a mass of bubbles from which rise four wavy metallic tubes, joining together in two groups of two, each tube with a glass sphere containing coloured liquid. Between the two groups of tubes, at centre, are two tendrils, striped red and white, held together by a 'gold' band. Behind are two spotted toadstools, all against a purple sky with stars and a planet or moon. The cut cloth is purple and forms a 'proscenium arch'. Around the centre opening, left blank in the design, is an arch of yellow stone, with a large tear-shaped jewel at the apex, the jewel in blue spotted with stars. The visible area within the arch is pale turquoise with a pattern of floral tendrils and, as if on top, the rectangular central opening has an elaborate frame in pale blue. The flat piece of scenery is designed to stand in front of the backdrop, and consists of a blue curve spotted all over in white, standing on a base, the upper and lower edges of which resembles the 'dado rail' on the backdrop, with, between, a pattern of curving shapes in orange, pink and mauve on a pale blue background. In front of the curve, at each side is a spotted toadstool, a red and white tendril, and a group of large 'lollipops' in various colours. |
