This belt was given by W. S. Gilbert (the librettist half of the comic opera duo Gilbert and Sullivan) to Sybil Grey in the late 19th century. Sybil Grey was a singer and actress, best remembered for creating small roles in Gilbert and Sullivan operas in the 1880s, including 'Peep-Bo', one of the three little maids in the original production of The Mikado.

The belt was donated to the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in 1967.
