V600 Clamshell Camera Phone

Mobile Phone
2004 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This 2004 mobile phone was manufactured by Motorola. It is a version of their V600 clamshell camera phone, so-called because the phone folds in half like a clam, with screen and keyboard on the inside. At the time, Motorola clamshell phones were considered particularly desirable, and this example is covered in a Vivienne Westwood-designed pattern with V&A/ Westwood logo. It was made especially to accompany the V&A's major Westwood retrospective and would have been sold exclusively through the Museum shop and via Westwood stores in the United Kingdom and Italy. Only 99 handsets were made of this particular design

Much like Sony Walkman music-players and Filofaxes were in the 1980s, mobile phones and related personal gadgets such as digital tablets and wearables such as the Apple smart-Watch have become defining fashion accessories of the early 21st century. Many fashion brands and designers now offer specially designed interchangeable covers and cases for holding these new technologies, as well as digital designs and applications to be installed onto the gadgets and personalise the user experience. This phone represents an early instance of a major fashion brand collaborating with a major technology brand to create an indispensable personal accessory combining essential day-to-day function with contemporary fashion branding.
